AKC Canine Health FOundation April 4th, 2009
- Reproductive Health-a few facts before breeding your bitch!
Bad Dental health in the bitch is the #1 reason causing early puppy death. Reason:
Septecimia from gingivitis seeping in the blood stream of the bitch, crossing the placenta and in her milk. MOthers
clean their young and continue to infect the pups.
Males can get prostate infection as well from bad teeth.
_______________________________________________ Parasites:
Get your breeding stock , feces tested 3 times a year. Round worms can invade the muscle (cysts), and
these cysts are activated in hormones of pregnancy. Larva passes thru placentia and milk to pups. Worm pups 3 times after nursing
in complete. ________________________________________________ DOn't vaccinate in heat or pregnant bitches.
Do titers instead of unneeded vaccines. Only vaccinate every 3 years of Titer is low only. _______________________________________________
NEW INFO:Flaxseed Oils, Soy or Omega 6 may cause reproductive
failures. Stop well ahead before heat. Use Fish oils, Omega 3. ________________________________________________________
Thyroid testing should include TGAA-Thyroid globulin Autoantibody, Fasting. Test 1/2 between heat cycles or 60 days after heat, at least one month before heat. OFA testing should be done,
at age 2,3,4,6, and 8 years.
Controversal in vets: but it is suggested that top half of normal range is OK. IF low normal range, may get low reproduction rates. Also test T4. Will need supplimentation.
Interesting fact:
IF the thyroid antibody is high in colostrum, then puppies will get antibodies and affect their thyroid in life. ________________________________________________________ Toxins in human food. Some dogs will react and may die due to Mycotoxins:
Grapes/raisns Macadamien nuts Moldy cheese and dairy products Moldy english and- black walnuts chocolate-coco
powder is the worst. 60% coco and caffine. Semisweet is next, milk chocolate-has mostly sugar so not many
toxins.
Reactions: cardiac tachycardia, seizures and possible death. May need stomach cut open
to remove all contents. Vomiting with charcoal does not get the toxins all out. Always have activated charcoal
at home for children also. Always get your dog to vomit is you think he has injested anything. Take the product
with you to the vet for further treatment to prevent death.
_______________________________________________________ Brucellosis testing-Prebreeding
This is not just a STD, and does not have
to be bred to get it. High levels of aborted fetes. Males can lick vaginal secretions of female and other males to be
infected. Highly infectious in Amniotic fluid and can infect all other dogs and puppies in household. Then the bacteria
is spread from dog to dog.
Prior to breeding, get Vaginal cultures prior to heat for Mycoplasma (takes
3 weeks to culture). Uterine Culture 4 days to get result before breeding, AI or Natural. Do
this when a. 5 and over b.Failure to concieve.
________________________________________________________ Do Vaginal smear when out of heat.
These are opinions and facts given by vets
on studies in their practise: Consult your own vet for more information.
Skin Coat: Fatty acids-glossy

Vit.D-helps
kidney abosortion of Calcium __________________________________________
Protein should be 26%, 25 to 30 in
dry foods Wet food-canned is much higher in protein than dry.
Protein does not cause kidney/liver damage.
An Underlying kidney or liver disorder is recommended to lower the protein in the diet. Protein does not
cause it.
Decrease the energy/fat in pups(see ingredients on bag), this will cause fast growing pups, so decrease
Energy/Fat. Use large puppy food.
Too much Calcium causes bone deformation. PUppies can't regulate calcium
absorption. Dry Flaky coat?- Fatty Acids like Omega 3, marine cold water fish EPA DHA for eye and brain development.
Shiney coat is from Omega 6. animal and vegatable sources, chicken, beef and lamb.
Puppy food-look for
DHA for eye and brain development. Deficiency in Zinc- crusting nose and feet. Antioxidants are Vit A,
E, C. _________________________________________________ Allergies are the immune responce to food protein. It initiates
immune system.
Most allergies are Beef, Dairy, Soy, Eggs, Wheat glutein. Lactose intolerance causes diarrhea.
Feed salmon, Fish oil, Rice is highly digestable carbohydrate. Dose for Omega 6 and 3? 5 Omega 3, to 1 Omega
6. Five to One. Also rotate sources of fish oils.

Genetics: Not one breeder wants genetic defects in their litter, but it is certain that there will be a defect
that shows up randamly. It could of come from 4th, 5th 6th generations back. ONe way to determine the culprit,
don't breed this pair again, check with other offspring on each parent to see if this defect has turned up. If so,
cull that dog out of your mating program. It is not that simple, but here is some info that may help understand genetics
and how complex it is.
There are 78 chromosones and 39 pairs. 1 from sire (50%) and 1 from dam(50%). Strung out
from Chromosomes are genes. Each pup gets a double set of Genetic Plan, the same percent.
Looking at Pedigrees: Grandparents in pedigree, the puppies might resemble them or carry concentration of their genes.
The 39th pair
of Chromosone is the sex chromosome. xx female
xy male MALE DETERMINES SEX OF PUPPY. SIZE OF LITTER IS FROM THE BITCH. There are dominant and recessive traits. Dominate determines temperment, dark eyes. Recessive determines light eyes. Dominate will always overrule Recessive. If you can determine a dominate gene in your animals, then stick to that dog for results you want to see.
Example: Sire has a dominate gene E, and recessive gene e. His eyes are dark colored because the E gene is dominant.
Dam Has Ee also. Her eyes are dark, but they both carry 2 recessive light eye genes. This means both parents
are proven carriers of e, light colored eyes. Your litter then will be mixed probably 50% light and 50% dark.
If a sire and dam are used with dark eyes, and all the litter is dark eye color, than you could say that both are Homozygous
EE, or pure dominate dark color traits. This goes for straight legs, high shoulder, length of leg, head size and ear
size. This determination will take years and time with litters and their parents to discover the dominate traits you
are looking for. Be consistent and follow your Rules.
What you see helps predict what you get. Make
use of VISABLE traits. Don't necessarily use the pedigree.
_____________________________________________ This is a fact!!! Threshold Trait-Females carry the Cryptorchidism gene. You need a large number of Cryp genes
to have this happen. Any combination from the sire or dam. Genes never blend its own degree of domence.
Threshold Traits are genes that determine hernia, PDE in pugs, patella, hip dysplasia.
Wide Chest, Conformation,
wide shoulder, gait, is high Heritability. Reproduction is low Heritability. Litter size is low. Fertility is low.
Bad temperment is considered a Genetic Disease. It is very difficult to eliminate.
Inbreeding is close relation, like parent/sibling, sibling/sibling.
Line breeding differs by degree of intensity.-
relatives other than parents and siblings. Linebred is the 1st 3 to 4 generations common to both sire and dam. Common
ancestors behind sire and dam.
Hybrid or Outcross breeding-Unrelated in the 1st six generations, Like to
Like breeding. Reason: when you want to bring in a trait that is not in your bitch or line. You would then
keep the puppy with that trait, and then breed it back to your lines.
Point: Give more importance to the dog's
traits than the pedigree. Hereitability of a trait will determine what the litter will be.
To determine
the Value of the dam and sire you would ask yourself, Is the offspring as good or better than the
parents?
Simple autosomal recessive defects are determined by the pedigree. In a Retrospective test
mating: Plan the mating; carrier or a defect is in 50% of the genes.Use the pedigree.
Orthopedic abnormalities:
Use large breed puppy food to reduce ortho defects. When I send puppies to their new owners, I recommend this or adult
food.
Use Adaquan in puppies, it has found to cause low dysplasia in adults.
